Brown Dyke Stables cottage is located in a quiet rural location in the Scottish Borders in Cumbria, just a few miles east of the historic Border City of Carlisle. It is an excellent base for exploring the local area with many historic attractions and some fantastic walking / cycling to be had nearby.

The famous Roman Wall - Hadrians Wall - marking the Northern border of the former Roman Empire, is only 2 miles away to the South and the local area is full of history and unspoiled scenery. The recognised "best" parts of the Roman Wall are located near to Haltwhistle - about 15 miles away.

From here there are bus and train routes east towards the market town of Hexham, historic Corbridge and the city of Newcastle with its shops, restaurants, etc. To the west, the historic city of Carlisle with its Castle, Cathedral and Tullie House (Border Reivers) Museum, as well as its excellent shopping and restaurants, is also well worth a visit.

Several major walking routes such as the Hadrian's Wall Path Trail and the Pennine Way pass through the area, as well as cycle routes such as the Coast to Coast (C2C) and the Hadrian's Wall Cycle Way (South Shields to Ravenglass).

The Eden Valley is also just a few minutes drive away with superb fishing and quiet, easy walks by the river. The peaceful North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Teesdale are easily accessible. We are also only 40 minutes drive from Caldbeck in the Lake District National Park.

Or perhaps water sports such as dinghy sailing, canoeing, rowing and windsurfing are your thing? If so, these are all available locally at Talkin Tarn Country Park. Fishing is also allowed at the tarn.

Why not take in a day at the races? - Carlisle Race Course is only a short drive away from us. For farmers, we are close to Longtown and Carlisle farmers auction marts. Getting married at Gretna Green? Why not stay in luxury at Brown Dykes Stables? We're only a few miles away.

Whether it is walking, cycling, horse riding, windsurfing, sailing, canoeing or mountain biking, there is always something for everyone in this part of Cumbria.
